Robbing Derek Jeter

So we are now into Hot Stove season and one of the most shocking items to me is the Derek Jeter situation. On one side we have the Yankees, all powerful, access to unlimited funds and the desire to win. On the other side we have Derek Jeter, clutch if there is such a thing, company man, non steroid user and face of the modern day franchise. So I ask you how is it that the Yankees want to rob this man of his dignity, legacy and his last payday? I am no Yankee fan but that has nothing do with this article. It pains me to see how a person can do everything right in their life to this point and then be treated less than the likes of A.J. Burnett, Alex Rodriguez or any other free agent of the month that decides they want to collect a paycheck from the Yanks. Resolve the issue, pay the man.

Note to Derek...Don't reduce your asking price. You will never look like the bad guy in this situation and there is no reason for you not to be paid what you are asking after you look at what you have accomplished as a Yankee.

  1. Let's compare him to two recently signed SS (Tulowitzki,26 and Tejada,36). He is worth more than the 6.5M Tejeda signed for obviously but he is 10 years older than Tulo. who will avg 15.75M over the next 10 years. He is no longer a top 4 SS as he was in the A-Rod, Nomar & Tejada days. I don't think it's much of an insult to give him 4 years @ 18M. They could even come up with trigger clauses based on World Series appearances. The Yankees shouldn't overpay him just because they did for AJ or A-Rod where the situation was different. They were desperate when they signed them and Jorge Posada too. So they should be able to find a middle ground. If he sticks to his guns he could be in trouble. How did it work out for Johnny Damon last year?

  2. I think you are missing the point I am making although yours is valid fiscally. My view on this Jeter issue is that with out Jeter there are no rings. He wasn't a gun for hire, he's franchise. Look around at all the other franchises in baseball how many have a "Jeter" type on their roster and then ask yourself how many of them will keep that player over the span of his career. He is a rare thing for this era. They need to sign him for what he's asking because of what he stands for and has done on the field. Sports isn't all business, at least it shouldn't be.
